Getting your home ready for holiday guests (2026)

Updated October 1, 2026

The short answer

Book the house cleaning for one to three days before your guests arrive, not the morning of. Make it a deep clean if the kitchen and bathrooms have not had one this year. Then point the crew at what a visitor checks first: the guest bathroom, the wall above the range and the tops of the door frames.

For a local plan, read Christmas cleaning in Dallas, Thanksgiving cleaning in Memphis, or Christmas cleaning in Boca Raton. Choosing a team for a Boca home first? Start with our Boca Raton house-cleaning guide.

Most of the year, clean is a private matter. Then somebody books a flight, and for four days your house is inspected by a person with time on her hands and opinions about grout.

That visitor is the reason the Mother-in-Law Test exists. This page is the plan for her visit: when to book the clean, what kind to book, which rooms she will actually look at, and what the house needs after the car pulls away.

When should you book a house cleaning before Thanksgiving?

Book the date the day you learn the arrival date. You are not the only household hosting that week, and the calendar does not care how organized you were last year.

Then aim the clean itself at one to three days before guests arrive. Closer than that and it collides with the cooking: a crew mopping the kitchen while you brine a turkey helps nobody. Further out and the house has been lived in again by the time the doorbell rings. A week-early clean is a clean your family has had five days to undo.

The morning of arrival is the worst slot of all. You are shopping, the oven is booked, and any delay lands on the one hour you cannot move. Leave that morning for the fridge, the flowers and the last towel.

If you are hosting twice, say Thanksgiving and then again in December, plan a clean before and a clean after each visit, rather than one heroic clean in November that is supposed to last until January. With M.I.L. Cleaners you pick the service and a real person quotes it before you book. Then walk the house yourself the evening before your guests land.

Deep clean or standard clean before guests?

It depends on what the house has had this year, not on how important the guest is. The line between the two is drawn room by room in what is included in a house cleaning.

What does a holiday guest actually notice?

Not the throw pillows. A guest who stays for days notices the places a quick clean skips, because she has time to stand in them. She hangs her coat and sees the dust on top of the door frame. She helps with the gravy and faces the film of grease on the wall above the range. She stands at the counter, and her eye drops to the toe-kick under the cabinets.

Then she goes to bed. The guest room door swings open against the wall and shows her the baseboard behind it. In the morning she showers and meets the grit in the shower track. None of this is fussiness. These are simply the spots a rushed crew never reaches, and a guest has the whole long weekend to find them.

That list is not a guess. It is what the Mother-in-Law Test names, spot by spot, and it is why M.I.L. Cleaners works from a written room-by-room list instead of memory. The guest bathroom you use twice a year gets the same list as the one you use every day. Nobody quietly skips the shower track because the room looked fine from the door.

How to get the guest room and guest bathroom ready

Split the work. The crew does the cleaning. You do the parts only a host can do.

  1. Sleep in the guest bed one night

It is the only honest test. You will find the lamp with no bulb, the blind that lets in the streetlight, and the pillow that went flat years ago. Better you than her.

  2. Wash the spare linens

Sheets that lived in a closet since the last visit smell like the closet. Wash them before the clean, then put them on after it, so the crew cleans a room and not a pile of laundry.

  3. Clear space before the crew arrives

A crew cleans what it can reach. Empty the guest bathroom counter and clear the nightstand, and do not scrub anything ahead of them. The reasoning is in how to check your house cleaner's work.

  4. Name the two rooms when you book

Tell the crew which bathroom and which bedroom the guests will use. On the M.I.L. Cleaners list those rooms get the same scope as your own: shower track, baseboards, the top of the door frame.

  5. Stock the guest bathroom after

Two towels per guest, a spare roll where she can find it without asking, hand soap, a nightlight, and a plunger that nobody has to request. Put it all out once the floors are dry.

Cleaning after holiday guests leave

Guests leave and take the tidiness with them. The guest bathroom has served four adults for a week. The kitchen has fed twelve. The entry has absorbed every wet shoe in the family, and pine needles have reached rooms the tree never entered.

Book the after-clean for the first weekday after they go, not the weekend they leave. You want the sheets stripped and the leftovers sorted before anyone arrives, and you want one quiet day between the airport run and the crew. If you are on a recurring plan and the visit was a short one, your next regular clean may cover it. After a long visit, book a one-time clean and let the regular schedule pick up from a clean floor.

On a recurring plan with M.I.L. Cleaners, the same background-checked crew that cleaned before the visit comes back after it. They know what your house looks like on an ordinary week, so they can see what the holiday did to it. And because there is no contract, a one-time clean after the guests is its own booking, not a change to a plan. If you want to thank a regular crew for the holiday rush, the guide to tipping house cleaners covers the holiday envelope.

Why M.I.L. Cleaners

Her standard, cleaned to before she arrives

Every spot on this page is one a guest finds without looking for it. The Mother-in-Law Test was written for exactly that visitor, and it is the standard your local M.I.L. Cleaners crew works to: the shower track, the top of the door frame, the film on the wall above the range, all on a written room-by-room list. The guest bathroom gets that list too, which is the point this time of year.

So time it the way this page says. Pick the service, book a quote, and set the clean for the days before the car pulls in. The products are non-toxic and safe around pets and children, which matters when the grandchildren arrive crawling. Then walk the guest room that evening, before the doorbell does it for you.

Holiday cleaning questions

How far ahead should I book a house cleaning before Thanksgiving?
Book it the day you know the arrival date, because every other host is booking that same week. Aim the clean itself for one to three days before your guests arrive. That is close enough that the house still looks done, and far enough from the cooking that the crew and the oven are not competing for the kitchen.
Should I get a deep clean before the holidays?
Yes, if the kitchen and bathrooms have not had one in the past year. A standard visit maintains a home. It does not lift months of grease on the range wall or scale on the shower glass. If you are on a recurring plan and the house is kept up, your regular visit, timed for the days before arrival, is usually enough.
Can the cleaners come while my guests are staying?
They can, but plan it. Book a morning when the guests are out, tell them which rooms the crew will be in, and strip the guest bed first if fresh sheets are the point. One clean before and one after is usually easier than working around a full house.
What should I do myself before holiday guests arrive?
The host jobs: wash the spare linens, clear the fridge, empty the guest bathroom counter, and sleep in the guest bed one night to find what is missing. Leave the scrubbing to the crew, and do not clean ahead of them, or you pay for the same hour twice.
When should I clean after holiday guests leave?
On the first weekday after they go. Strip the beds and sort the leftovers first, so the crew cleans rooms instead of piles. After a long visit, book a one-time clean rather than waiting for the next regular one.
